Who exactly is Louise Erdrich?

Louise Erdrich was born in Little Falls, Minnesota on July 6, 1954. Her parents taught at Bureau of Indian Affairs School in Wahpeton, North Dakota. They encouraged her to express herself through writing. She was the one of the first women who were ever admitted to Dartmouth College where she majored in English and Creative Writing. There she met her future husband Michael Dorris who founded the Native American Studies Program at Dartmouth, and they were soon married in October of 1981. Their marriage was not a happy one and on April 11, 1997 he committed suicide. While she was an undergrad, she won prizes for poetry and fiction. She earned an M.F.A. degree at Johns Hopkins. She won the National Book Critics Circle award for Love Medicine.
